These isolated barriers carry the 4–20 mA signal from the control system to SMART I/P converters, electrical valves and positioners installed in the hazardous area, keeping the two circuits galvanically isolated. HART digital signals superimposed on the analogue value are transferred bidirectionally, so field instruments can be configured and diagnosed from the control system.

Alongside the Power Rail supplied current drivers, loop-powered versions with only a 5 V voltage drop and low power dissipation are available, plus a current/voltage converter that turns a 0–20 mA or 0–10 V signal from the hazardous area into a 4–20 mA output in the safe area.
