Takes communications into the hazardous area. The 1700-SA is intended for installation in the safe area: its two fibre-optic ports are designated "Ex op is", meaning the transmitted optical power is considered intrinsically safe to IEC 60079-28:2015.

It works as an unmanaged Ethernet switch with the fibre and copper ports interconnected internally: no configuration is required.
