Frequently asked questions

Which cable gland do I need for an Ex d enclosure?

Flameproof Ex d enclosures need Ex d certified cable glands (many models are dual-certified Ex d / Ex e). They are selected according to the cable (armoured or unarmoured, outer and inner sheath diameter), the thread of the entry and the required IP rating. Where IEC 60079-14 requires it, a barrier gland with compound must be used to stop an explosion travelling along the cable.

Can I fit an Ex e cable gland on an Ex d enclosure?

No. A gland certified only as Ex e does not provide the flameproof seal an Ex d enclosure needs. A dual-certified Ex d / Ex e gland, however, can be used on both types of enclosure.

Metric or NPT: which thread should I choose?

It depends on the enclosure entry: ISO metric threads are standard in Europe and IEC installations, tapered NPT threads in North American-style installations. When they do not match, use adaptors certified for the same type of protection as the enclosure, keeping their number to the minimum and following the manufacturer's instructions.
